Frequently Asked Questions

It's common to have questions about such a big build, and we want to ensure that your mind is at rest when working with PJD Loft Conversions. Below is a list of frequently asked questions, but if you need more information, just get in touch.

1) How much will my loft conversion cost?

A loft conversion with a dormer on a semi-detached house for a en-suite bedroom would start at £36,000 plus VAT.

2) Do I need planning permission?

Not necessarily; we do most of our loft conversions under permitted development. The only time you may need permission is if your house is already heavily extended or if you are overlooking a park or a dual carriage way. If you are unsure whether you need permission or not you can get a lawful development certificate from the local planning authority.

3) Will I need drawings?

With over 40 years of experience and knowledge we know the best way to achieve maximum liveable space therefore we draw up a layout plan ourselves for you to review. However, if you require planning permission an architect will need to draw up some plans to submit to the council.

4) How long will the project take?

We usually aim for 6 weeks from start to finish. Sometimes it may go beyond this if the customer chooses to have extra work carried out.

5) Are we able to live in the house while works are ongoing?

Yes, that is not a problem; we do most of the work form the scaffolding and complete as much as possible before we insert the new stair case. Once your new stairs are in, we lay floor protection throughout and clean up after ourselves at the end of each day.

6) Does your company hold insurance?

Yes, we have valid Public Liability insurance up to the value of £1m

7) Is there anything I need to do before you start?

You need to ensure that a Party wall act is in place with your neighbour(s). We also ask that you clear all belongings from the loft.

8) Will there be any damage to my house during the project?

It is common for the odd crack in the ceilings below the loft, nothing too major and easily rectified by a painter.

9) What is a party wall act and do we require one?

10) Do you take on part loft conversions?

Yes, we do. We can offer a partial loft conversion which includes all structural work and a completed loft conversion externally and fitting of the stair case if required.
